Exactly what a Banff Gondola ticket costs, what's included in the price, and how to pay less. Adult round-trip admission starts from $67 — booked online with 24-hour free cancellation, the same ticket sold at the base station with no reseller markup.
The Experience
Everything covered by one round-trip admission to the Sulphur Mountain summit.
Four steps to the lowest price on a round-trip Sulphur Mountain ticket.
Decide between a standalone round-trip admission (from $67) and a guided combo day-tour that visits the gondola alongside the lakes and hot springs. Most visitors just want the admission.
The online advance price is the same ticket sold at the base — but pre-booking locks in your time slot and avoids the higher walk-up risk on busy summer days when counter tickets can sell out.
The round-trip cable car climbs Sulphur Mountain in about 8 minutes to the upper terminal at roughly 2,281 m — both directions are included in the one admission price.
Your ticket covers the rooftop observation deck, the Above Banff interpretive centre, and the 1 km Sanson's Peak boardwalk — all at no extra cost once you're up top.

The single most-asked question about Sulphur Mountain is simply: how much does the Banff Gondola cost? The short version is that a round-trip adult admission starts from $67 USD when booked online in advance — the same ticket sold at the base station, just with a guaranteed time slot and 24-hour free cancellation. But the headline number hides a few things worth knowing before you pay, from what’s actually included to how to shave the price down. Here’s the full breakdown.
Adult round-trip admission is roughly CAD $60–80 depending on the season and the day you go — prices are dynamic, so the live figure moves with demand. Booked online in advance it currently starts from $67 USD per person, and that buys the complete round-trip: up and back down Sulphur Mountain on the enclosed cable car. Children’s tickets are cheaper than the adult rate, and very young children often ride free — check the live booking page for the current child price, as it changes with the season.
| Ticket type | Price | What you pay for |
|---|---|---|
| Adult round-trip admission | from $67 | Cable car both ways + summit facilities |
| Child admission | lower than adult (check live) | Same access at a reduced child rate |
| Combo day-tour (lakes, hot springs + gondola visit) | from $47 | Guided day-trip; gondola entry bought separately |
A couple of price notes that catch people out: the cheapest way to ride is to book online before you arrive rather than at the counter, and the price is per person for the round trip — there’s no separate “up only” discount on the standard admission. A Banff National Park day pass (around CAD $11 per adult) is required to be in the park at all and is not part of your gondola ticket.
One admission price covers more than just the ride. Operated by Pursuit (Banff Jasper Collection), the round-trip ticket includes:
What’s not included: meals at the summit restaurants, the park entry pass, and gratuities. There’s no hidden upsell to reach the deck or the boardwalk — they all come with the base admission.
Yes, for two reasons. First, advance online booking is the same price or cheaper than the counter, never more. Second, on busy summer days the gondola sells timed slots and the base-station counter can run out mid-afternoon — pre-booking guarantees your ride and lets you pick a quieter time. Because GetYourGuide bookings carry free cancellation up to 24 hours before, locking in a date is low-risk even if your Rockies itinerary is still loose. (Booking direct from Pursuit, by contrast, is non-refundable.)
There’s no secret coupon, but there are three real levers on the price:
With a 4.7/5 rating from 3,832 guests, the value verdict is clearly positive — it’s consistently one of the highest-volume, best-rated paid attractions in Banff. For one ticket you get an 8-minute ascent, a fully-enclosed summit complex, the observation deck, and the Sanson’s Peak boardwalk, all weather-protected. The main “is it worth it” debate is gondola versus hiking, which we break down in detail in our gondola vs Sulphur Mountain hike comparison.
You can absolutely hike up Sulphur Mountain instead of paying for the ascent — it’s about 5.5 km with roughly 700 m of climb on a switchback trail. Hikers can buy a one-way ride down at the summit rather than the full round-trip fare — but it is not free in summer: from roughly mid-May to October the downhill ticket is about half the day rate, and a free descent generally applies only in the winter off-peak. Pricing is operator-set and changes seasonally, so confirm the current ride-down rate on the official site. Either way, hiking up and riding down is a long-standing way to trim the cost while still enjoying the cable car.

"The views were spectacular. Gondola ride amazing experience"
"Sulphur mountain is amazing to visit. Gondola ride can appear a bit expensive, but the view is fantastic. From the top, you can do a short hike to an observation point. Inside the mountaintop discovery center, there’s a coffee shop and two stunning panoramic restaurants. Worth having a warm meal here. There’s an option to hike up and down without the gondola, but it’s quite a steep one. With the GYG ticket, you just take it up to the counter to pick up a physical ticket that will be scanned for entry into the gondolas."

"Beautiful ride up to the top with the gondola! Stunning views of snow covered trees and mountain tops. The 8 minute ride up sounds short but was sufficient. The boardwalk was amazing with 360 views of the mountains and was not hard. I did up to 75%. Booking via this app was also cheaper than in person at the counter. I would definitely say this is a must do on your visit to Banff!"

"The Gondola experience was incredible. There are some trails to see the most incredible views from the top of the mountain! I loved it!"

Yes. Advance online booking is the same price as the counter or cheaper, never more, and it guarantees your time slot — on busy summer afternoons the base-station counter can sell out. Booking through GetYourGuide also gives you free cancellation up to 24 hours before, so locking in a date is low-risk. Check live availability and prices to reserve your slot.
There's no secret coupon, but three levers help: book online in advance rather than walking up (the biggest saving), visit in shoulder season when the wider trip costs less, or bundle the gondola into a combo day-tour that starts from $47. You can also hike up and buy a (roughly half-price in summer) one-way ride down. For the cheapest months to go, see our best time to visit guide.
With a 4.7/5 rating from 3,832 guests it's one of the best-rated paid attractions in Banff, and one ticket covers the ride, the summit complex, the observation deck, and the Sanson's Peak boardwalk. The main value question is gondola versus hiking, which we break down in our gondola vs Sulphur Mountain hike comparison.
You can hike up Sulphur Mountain — about 5.5 km with roughly 700 m of climb — instead of paying for the ascent. It is not free in summer: hikers can buy a one-way ride down for roughly half the day rate from about mid-May to October, with a free descent generally only in the winter off-peak. The policy is operator-set and seasonal, so confirm the current rate on the official site. See our hike vs gondola guide for the full trade-off.
Children's tickets are priced lower than the adult round-trip rate, and very young children often ride free. The exact child price changes with the season and demand, so check the live booking page for the current figure before you book. Families travelling together usually find the per-person cost drops noticeably once child rates are applied.
The admission price itself stays fairly steady year-round, but the cheapest overall trips fall in shoulder season — late April, May, mid-October, and November — when Banff accommodation is much cheaper and queues are short. Mid-September is a sweet spot: light crowds, golden larches, and falling hotel rates while the gondola runs its full schedule. Our month-by-month guide covers the trade-offs.
No. A Banff National Park day pass (around CAD $11 per adult at standard 2026 rates, or about CAD $22.50 for a family/group) is required to be in the park at all and is separate from your gondola admission. Note that park admission is free from June 19 to September 7, 2026 under the federal Canada Strong Pass, so if your trip falls in that window the pass is waived.
