Four steps to time your Sulphur Mountain visit right.
Opening and closing times shift by season. Before you plan, confirm the exact hours for your travel date on Pursuit's official Banff Gondola site — the times below are approximate guides only.
The last gondola up is typically about 90 minutes before closing, and the last ride down just before close. Arrive well before the final uphill departure so you have time at the summit.
Plan to spend roughly 1.5 to 3 hours at the upper terminal for the boardwalk to Sanson's Peak, the interpretive centre, the observation deck, and dining.
Early morning or late evening means thinner crowds and softer light; midday in summer is busiest. Pre-book a timed entry slot so your arrival lines up with the hours.

The Banff Gondola climbs Sulphur Mountain just outside Banff townsite in Alberta, carrying you on an eight-minute ride to the upper terminal at roughly 2,281 metres. It’s operated by Pursuit (the Banff Jasper Collection), and the single question most first-time visitors ask before booking is simple: when is it actually open? The honest answer is it depends on the season — so treat every time on this page as an approximate guide and confirm the exact hours for your date on the official operator site before you set out. This page covers the operational facts: opening and closing, the last ride, and how long to stay. For month-by-month seasonal advice — weather, festivals, and which months to choose — see our best time to visit Banff Gondola guide.
Banff Gondola opening hours are seasonal and change through the year, so there is no single fixed schedule. As a rough guide, the gondola opens around 9:00 am — sometimes as early as 8:00 am in peak summer — and closes considerably later in summer (often around 9:00 to 10:00 pm) than in winter, when it typically closes in the mid-to-late afternoon or early evening. Shoulder seasons (spring and autumn) fall somewhere in between. Because these windows shift with daylight, demand, and weather, the only reliable hours are the ones published for your specific travel date. Always check the official Pursuit Banff Gondola site before you go, and don’t plan a tight evening visit around the summer hours if you’re travelling in winter.
The last gondola up is typically about 90 minutes before the posted closing time, and the last ride down usually leaves shortly before close. That means the listed “closing time” is not the time you can still start your visit — it’s roughly when the mountain shuts. To enjoy the summit, aim to board the uphill gondola well before that final departure. If you’re chasing sunset in summer, build in a comfortable buffer: getting up the mountain is the easy part, but you must be back at the upper terminal in time for the last ride down. As with everything here, confirm the exact last-ride times for your date on the official site.
Plan for about 1.5 to 3 hours at the top. That’s enough time to walk the boardwalk out to Sanson’s Peak, explore the Above Banff interpretive centre, take in the 360-degree views from the observation deck, and grab a coffee or a meal at one of the summit eateries. If you only want the views and a quick boardwalk stroll, 90 minutes is realistic; if you want to dine or linger for photos across changing light, give yourself the full three hours. Add the eight-minute ride each way plus any queue at the base, and you can see why timing your arrival against the day’s hours matters.
Yes — entry to the Banff Gondola is timed and pre-booked, so you reserve a specific arrival window rather than simply turning up. Booking ahead secures your preferred time slot (peak windows do sell out in high season) and means you arrive aligned with the operating hours rather than risking a sold-out afternoon. The featured round-trip admission is rated 4.7/5 by over 3,832 guests, starts from $67, and comes with 24-hour free cancellation, so you can lock in a slot now and adjust if your plans shift.
For the experience itself, early morning or late evening wins: you get thinner crowds and the softest light, with sunset especially rewarding in the long summer evenings. Midday in summer is the busiest window, with the longest queues at the base. Choose your slot to match — an early ride if you want a quiet summit, or a late one for golden hour, always within the day’s confirmed hours. That’s the time of day question; for which months and seasons suit your trip, the season-by-season detail lives in our dedicated guide.
Remember: every time on this page is approximate. Hours change seasonally — verify the exact opening, closing, and last-ride times for your travel date on the official Banff Gondola site before you go.

"As someone who enjoys the outdoors and has done lots of exploring around Canada, I cannot say that I’ve had a better view than this. It was absolutely breathtaking."

"The views were spectacular. Gondola ride amazing experience"
"Sulphur mountain is amazing to visit. Gondola ride can appear a bit expensive, but the view is fantastic. From the top, you can do a short hike to an observation point. Inside the mountaintop discovery center, there’s a coffee shop and two stunning panoramic restaurants. Worth having a warm meal here. There’s an option to hike up and down without the gondola, but it’s quite a steep one. With the GYG ticket, you just take it up to the counter to pick up a physical ticket that will be scanned for entry into the gondolas."

"Beautiful ride up to the top with the gondola! Stunning views of snow covered trees and mountain tops. The 8 minute ride up sounds short but was sufficient. The boardwalk was amazing with 360 views of the mountains and was not hard. I did up to 75%. Booking via this app was also cheaper than in person at the counter. I would definitely say this is a must do on your visit to Banff!"

"The Gondola experience was incredible. There are some trails to see the most incredible views from the top of the mountain! I loved it!"

The last ride down usually leaves shortly before the gondola closes for the day. You must be back at the upper terminal in time to catch it — especially in summer if you've gone up for sunset. As with all gondola times, the exact last-ride-down time varies by season, so verify it for your date before planning a late-evening visit.
Plan for about 1.5 to 3 hours at the top. That covers the boardwalk out to Sanson's Peak, the Above Banff interpretive centre, the 360-degree observation deck, and a coffee or meal at the summit. Ninety minutes is enough for just the views and a quick stroll; give yourself the full three hours if you want to dine or linger for photos. Our what to expect at the Banff Gondola guide walks through the summit stage by stage.

Early morning or late evening — both bring thinner crowds and softer light, with sunset especially rewarding in long summer evenings. Midday in summer is the busiest window with the longest queues at the base. That's the best time of day; for which months and seasons suit your trip, see our best time to visit Banff Gondola guide, which covers weather, crowds, and festival programming month by month.
The cable car ride up Sulphur Mountain takes about 8 minutes each way, climbing to the upper terminal at roughly 2,281 metres. Factor in the ride both directions plus any queue at the base station when you plan your visit around the day's hours.
Yes, the Banff Gondola operates in winter, but with shorter hours than summer — it generally closes in the mid-to-late afternoon or early evening rather than at night. Hours and any weather-related closures vary, so confirm the schedule for your date on the official site. For a season-by-season breakdown of what winter at the summit is like, see our best time to visit guide.
