"As someone who enjoys the outdoors and has done lots of exploring around Canada, I cannot say that I’ve had a better view than this. It was absolutely breathtaking."

"The views were spectacular. Gondola ride amazing experience"
"Sulphur mountain is amazing to visit. Gondola ride can appear a bit expensive, but the view is fantastic. From the top, you can do a short hike to an observation point. Inside the mountaintop discovery center, there’s a coffee shop and two stunning panoramic restaurants. Worth having a warm meal here. There’s an option to hike up and down without the gondola, but it’s quite a steep one. With the GYG ticket, you just take it up to the counter to pick up a physical ticket that will be scanned for entry into the gondolas."

"Beautiful ride up to the top with the gondola! Stunning views of snow covered trees and mountain tops. The 8 minute ride up sounds short but was sufficient. The boardwalk was amazing with 360 views of the mountains and was not hard. I did up to 75%. Booking via this app was also cheaper than in person at the counter. I would definitely say this is a must do on your visit to Banff!"

"The Gondola experience was incredible. There are some trails to see the most incredible views from the top of the mountain! I loved it!"

Everything you need to know before booking your Sulphur Mountain gondola ride.
Round-trip Banff Gondola admission starts from $67 USD per person (CA$89.95 at the gate in 2026). Your ticket includes the round-trip cable car to the 2,281 m Sulphur Mountain summit, the 360° rooftop observation deck, the Above Banff interpretive centre, the Sanson's Peak boardwalk, and free Roam Transit access during the May–October shuttle season. Food and drinks are not included.
With a 4.7/5 rating from over 3,832 guests, yes — for most visitors the round-trip cable car is the easiest way to reach the Sulphur Mountain summit and the Sanson's Peak weather station. Reviewers consistently praise the views over Banff townsite, the Bow Valley, Cascade Mountain, and the six surrounding ranges. The most common critique is the price compared to hiking up Sulphur Mountain trail (5.5 km, 700 m elevation) and riding the gondola down for half-price — an option worth considering if you have the time and fitness. See our Banff Gondola vs Sulphur Mountain hike comparison for the full trade-off.
Round-trip cable car ride to the summit, access to the rooftop observation deck, the Above Banff interpretive centre, the Above Banff theatre, the Sanson's Peak boardwalk, and three on-site restaurants (food and drink purchased separately). Free Banff Gondola Shuttle from downtown Banff and Roam Transit Route 1 access are included with same-day tickets between May 12 and October 12, 2026. Seasonal experiences — Bloom & Brunch (April–May), Sunset Festival (June–September), Mountaintop Christmas (Nov–Dec) — are included with admission on event dates.
Plan for 2 to 3 hours start to finish. The gondola ride itself is about 8 minutes each way. Most visitors spend 60–90 minutes at the summit walking the 1 km Sanson's Peak boardwalk, exploring the interpretive centre, and taking in the 360° views. The last ride up is 30 minutes before closing; the last ride down is 10 minutes before closing — check operating hours for your visit date. Our first-timer's guide to the Banff Gondola walks through the summit experience stage by stage.
At the base of Sulphur Mountain at the end of Mountain Avenue in Banff, Alberta. From Banff Ave, travel south to the end, turn left after the Bow River bridge onto Spray Ave, then stay right onto Mountain Ave to the parking lot. It's about a 5-minute drive or 30-minute walk from downtown Banff. Coordinates: 51.148, -115.556.
Parking is very limited. The Sulphur Mountain Paid Parking lot, managed by Parks Canada, costs an additional CA$17.50 and frequently fills up at peak times. The provider strongly recommends the free Banff Gondola Shuttle from downtown Banff or Roam Transit Route 1 — both are included with your ticket from May 12 to October 12, 2026. Show your same-day ticket to the shuttle or transit driver to board. Our book ahead vs walk-up guide covers the parking-and-shuttle decision by season.
A Parks Canada national park day pass is required for everyone visiting Banff National Park, including Banff Gondola visitors. It's NOT included with your gondola admission ticket — you'll need to buy it separately at the park gate (about CA$11 per adult per day, or CA$22 for a family/group pass) or use an annual Discovery Pass.
Early morning (first ride, usually 8:00 or 9:00 AM) and the last hour before closing tend to have the shortest queues and the best light for photos. June through September is peak season with the longest operating hours and the Sunset Festival programme. Winter (December–March) offers snow-covered summit views and the Mountaintop Christmas experience. Weather changes fast in the Rockies — check the forecast and dress in layers regardless of season. See our month-by-month best time to visit Banff Gondola guide for the full breakdown.
Yes, the Banff Gondola operates year-round with rare closures for maintenance or extreme weather (high winds, lightning). The summit experience changes by season: summer brings the Sunset Festival and full boardwalk access; spring offers Bloom & Brunch weekends (April–May); autumn shows larch trees turning gold; winter brings Mountaintop Christmas and snow-blanketed views. Check the operator's calendar before your visit date.
The gondola runs in most weather conditions — including light snow and rain — and the summit visitor centre is fully enclosed. Heavy fog or low cloud can obscure the views; on those days the operator does not issue refunds unless the gondola itself is closed for safety. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before your time slot lets you reschedule if poor weather is forecast. Check the live webcam at the summit before driving up.
Children of all ages are welcome and ride at reduced rates. Strollers are NOT allowed in the gondola cabins or on the summit boardwalk — leave them in your car or at the base station. Babies in front-carriers or backpacks are fine. Wheelchairs are accommodated; contact the operator in advance to confirm accessibility for your specific needs.
Yes. The Sulphur Mountain Trail is a 5.5 km hike (one-way) with about 700 m of elevation gain — most fit hikers take 2 to 3 hours up. Many visitors hike up and buy a one-way gondola download ticket (about half the round-trip price) for an easier descent. The trailhead is near the gondola base station. The trail is well-maintained but steep and exposed in places; pack water, snacks, and bear spray. See our full Banff Gondola vs Sulphur Mountain hike comparison.
